He managed to get alive into the ditch by the side of the road, and so escaped to Woking.  There his story became ejaculatory. The place was impassable.  It seems there were a few people alive there, frantic for the most part and many burned and scalded.  He was turned aside by the fire, and hid among some almost scorching heaps of broken wall as one of the Martian giants returned.  He saw this one pursue a man, catch him up in one of its steely tentacles, and knock his head against the trunk of a pine tree.  At last, after nightfall, the artilleryman made a rush for it and got over the railway embankment.<br /><br />Since then he had been skulking along towards Maybury, in the hope of getting out of danger Londonward.  People were hiding in trenches and cellars, and many of the survivors had made off towards Woking village and Send.  He had been consumed with thirst until he found one of the water mains near the railway arch smashed, and the water bubbling out like a spring upon the road.<br /><br />That was the story I got from him, bit by bit.  He grew calmer telling me and trying to make me see the things he had seen.  He had eaten no food since midday, he told me early in his narrative, and I found some mutton and bread in the pantry and brought it into the room.  We lit no lamp for fear of attracting the Martians, and ever and again our hands would touch upon bread or meat. It was the first march of a large body of men and animals I had ever witnessed which raised no dust and left no spoor; for there is no dust upon Mars except in the cultivated districts during the winter months, and even then the absence of high winds renders it almost unnoticeable.<br /><br />We camped that night at the foot of the hills we had been approaching for two days and which marked the southern boundary of this particular sea.  Our animals had been two days without drink, nor had they had water for nearly two months, not since shortly after leaving Thark; but, as Tars Tarkas explained to me, they require but little and can live almost indefinitely upon the moss which covers Barsoom, and which, he told me, holds in its tiny stems sufficient moisture to meet the limited demands of the animals.<br /><br />After partaking of my evening meal of cheese-like food and vegetable milk I sought out Sola, whom I found working by the light of a torch upon some of Tars Tarkas' trappings.[right-post]  She looked up at my approach, her face lighting with pleasure and with welcome.

I could not fathom the seeming hallucination, nor could I free myself from it; but somewhere in the innermost recesses of my soul I felt a strange yearning toward these unknown foemen, and a mighty hope surged through me that the fleet would return and demand a reckoning from the green warriors who had so ruthlessly and wantonly attacked it.<br /><br />Close at my heel, in his now accustomed place, followed Woola, the hound, and as I emerged upon the street Sola rushed up to me as though I had been the object of some search on her part.  The cavalcade was returning to the plaza, the homeward march having been given up for that day; nor, in fact, was it recommenced for more than a week, owing to the fear of a return attack by the air craft.<br /><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Lorquas Ptomel was too astute an old warrior to be caught upon the open plains with a caravan of chariots and children, and so we remained at the deserted city until the danger seemed passed.</blockquote><br />As Sola and I entered the plaza a sight met my eyes which filled my whole being with a great surge of mingled hope, fear, exultation, and depression, and yet most dominant was a subtle sense of relief and happiness; for just as we neared the throng of Martians I caught a glimpse of the prisoner from the battle craft who was being roughly dragged into a nearby building by a couple of green Martian females.<br /><br />And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure, similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life.  She did not see me at first, but just as she was disappearing through the portal of the building which was to be her prison she turned, and her eyes met mine.  Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair, caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure.  Her skin was of a light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a strangely enhancing effect.<br /><br />She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.<br /><br />As her gaze rested on me her eyes opened wide in astonishment, and she made a little sign with her free hand; a sign which I did not, of course, understand.  Just a moment we gazed upon each other, and then the look of hope and renewed courage which had glorified her face as she discovered me, faded into one of utter dejection, mingled with loathing and contempt.  I realized I had not answered her signal, and ignorant as I was of Martian customs, I intuitively felt that she had made an appeal for succor and protection which my unfortunate ignorance had prevented me from answering.  And then she was dragged out of my sight into the depths of the deserted edifice.<br /><br />As I came back to myself I glanced at Sola, who had witnessed this encounter and I was surprised to note a strange expression upon her usually expressionless countenance.  What her thoughts were I did not know, for as yet I had learned but little of the Martian tongue; enough only to suffice for my daily needs.<br /><br />As I reached the doorway of our building a strange surprise awaited me. A warrior approached bearing the arms, ornaments, and full accouterments of his kind. I was twenty-seven  years old, and well do I remember it. And the word came of a strange disease that had broken out in  New York. There were seventeen millions of people living then in that  noblest city of America. Nobody thought anything about the news. It seemed, though,  that they had died very quickly, and that one of the first signs of  the disease was the turning red of the face and all the body. Within  twenty-four hours came the report of the first case in Chicago. They could travel two hundred miles  an hour. The mail contracts with the New York and San Francisco Limited  demanded that for the minimum. There was a chap, a Frenchman, I forget  his name, who succeeded in making three hundred; but the thing was  risky, too risky for conservative persons. But he was on the right clew,  and he would have managed it if it hadn't been for the Great Plague. But Hare-Lip, with a sling such as David carried into battle  against Goliath, hurled a stone through the air that whistled from the  speed of its flight. It fell squarely among the wolves and caused them  to slink away toward the dark depths of the eucalyptus forest.
